At Shanti Recovery and Wellness, we believe that healing begins with understanding—and that understanding starts with expert psychiatric care. Since 2014, we’ve been helping individuals reclaim their lives through personalized, evidence-based psychiatric treatment for mental health disorders, substance use, and co-occurring conditions. As a dual-diagnosis psychiatry-focused practice in Portland, Oregon, we specialize in addressing the complex interplay between mental illness and addiction. Our compassionate team works collaboratively with each client to provide a treatment experience rooted in science, empathy, and respect.

Psychiatry That Treats the Whole Person
We recognize that mental health and addiction do not exist in isolation. Each individual brings their own history, biology, and challenges. That’s why our approach to psychiatry goes beyond symptom management. At Shanti, we treat the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—through a comprehensive care model that integrates psychiatric assessment, medication management, and psychotherapeutic support.
Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, trauma, or substance use, our licensed psychiatric providers will work with you to create a tailored treatment plan that fits your unique needs and long-term goals.
Locally Owned, Deeply Committed
Shanti Recovery and Wellness is locally owned and operated in the heart of Portland. Since opening our doors, we’ve been driven by a deep commitment to the well-being of our community. We understand the specific needs of those living in the Portland area, and we bring that insight to every aspect of our care.
Being local also means being accessible, responsive, and rooted in real relationships. Our clients often describe Shanti as a safe, welcoming space—more like a home than a clinic. That’s exactly the environment we aim to create: calm, respectful, and centered around you.

PiggySkinn2024-11-16Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I can't believe I've been with Shanti for 10 years now. Before I met Dr. Bahl, I went to many rehabs, and I just couldn't seem to do it. I give a lot of credit to him for the help in my success against addiction. I'm currently seeing Dr. Heims and she I incredibly helpful in keeping my mental health strong too. I could never thank those at Shanti enough. Liz2024-10-07Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have had such a wonderful experience working with Megan V. for over a year now. I'm a medical professional myself and as I tackled career and life changes and challenges - she helped make things so much easier! Not just with medication education and advice but with real life tips too on time management, positive habit development and enhancing self-care. And you can tell she really cares, she wants you to win. She follows-up and asks about how things are going, she listens and really concentrates on your overall wellness. Even as someone who does a LOT of personal development work on my own, she helped me restructure some of my daily routines to make my life so much more successful and I'm so grateful! A Clear Path to Healing
We believe in simplifying the healing journey, making it accessible and supportive every step of the way. Here’s what to expect:

Specialized in Dual Diagnosis
Many of our clients are managing both a mental health condition and a substance use disorder. Our psychiatric providers are trained in dual-diagnosis care, meaning they understand how these conditions intersect—and how to treat them together, not separately. This leads to more effective, sustainable outcomes.

Integrated Psychiatric Care
Our psychiatry services are integrated with therapy, case management, and peer support to ensure continuity of care. This collaborative, multidisciplinary approach helps clients stabilize more quickly and build the tools they need for lasting recovery.

Medication with Meaning
We use medication as a tool, not a crutch. Our providers carefully evaluate whether medication is right for each client and provide ongoing medication management with a focus on safety, efficacy, and client empowerment.

Inclusive and Nonjudgmental
Stigma has no place here. Whether you're seeking help for the first time or returning after a setback, you’ll be met with respect, dignity, and zero judgment. Our team is LGBTQ+ affirming, trauma-informed, and committed to cultural humility in all aspects of care.

Our Psychiatric Services Include:
- Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluations
- Medication Management
- Treatment for Depression, Anxiety, PTSD, Bipolar Disorder, and more
- Substance Use Disorder Treatment
- Integrated Care for Co-Occurring Disorders
- Trauma-Informed Psychiatry
- Supportive Therapy & Referral Coordination
- Relapse Prevention and Long-Term Support
Each client receives a personalized treatment plan tailored to their diagnosis, goals, and life circumstances. Whether you need short-term stabilization or ongoing psychiatric support, we’re here to help.
Innovative Psychiatry: Now Offering TMS Therapy
As part of our commitment to providing cutting-edge psychiatric care, Shanti Recovery and Wellness proudly offers Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy—a safe, non-invasive, and FDA-approved treatment for depression and other mental health conditions that haven’t responded to traditional therapies.
TMS uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. It’s a powerful option for individuals who have not found relief through medication or talk therapy alone. TMS is drug-free, virtually painless, and requires no anesthesia or downtime, making it an excellent alternative or complement to more traditional treatment plans.
We recommend TMS therapy for clients dealing with:
- Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
- Treatment-Resistant Depression
- Anxiety Disorders
- PTSD
Our psychiatry team will work with you to determine whether TMS is right for your situation. For many, it represents a turning point in their mental health journey—a chance to find hope after feeling stuck.

At Shanti, we combine TMS with comprehensive psychiatric oversight, ensuring each session aligns with your overall care plan. Whether you’re exploring alternatives to medication or looking for enhanced treatment options, TMS therapy could be the breakthrough you’ve been waiting for.

A Safe, Clinical Space with Heart
Healing takes place where people feel safe—and that’s exactly what we strive to offer at Shanti. Our environment is designed to feel both professional and welcoming, giving clients the structure of expert psychiatric care with the comfort of a supportive, human-centered atmosphere.
From the first intake to your ongoing sessions, you’ll experience care that is grounded in genuine connection. Our clients are more than patients—they’re people with stories, strengths, and futures worth investing in.
Long-Term Healing, Not Quick Fixes
We don’t believe in band-aid solutions. At Shanti, our psychiatric care is focused on long-term healing and sustainable change. That’s why we emphasize regular check-ins, treatment adjustments, and continuity of care.
As your needs evolve, so will your treatment plan. Whether you’re managing medication, stepping down from a higher level of care, or reintegrating into everyday life, our team will be here to guide and support you every step of the way.

What is the difference between psychiatry and psychology?
While both psychiatry and psychology focus on mental health and emotional well-being, they differ in training, approach, and the types of treatments they provide:
Psychiatry is a branch of medicine. Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MDs or DOs) who specialize in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions. Because they have medical training, psychiatrists can prescribe medication, provide psychiatric evaluations, and oversee treatment plans that may include both medications and therapy.
Psychology, on the other hand, is the study of the mind and behavior. Psychologists typically hold a PhD or PsyD and provide talk therapy and psychological testing. They help clients understand patterns, develop coping strategies, and work through emotional or behavioral challenges—but they do not prescribe medication (unless they hold special credentials in certain states).
What does “dual-diagnosis” mean?
Dual-diagnosis refers to individuals who are experiencing both a mental health disorder (such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder) and a substance use disorder. Treating both simultaneously is essential for lasting recovery, and it’s what our team is specially trained to do.
Who can receive treatment at Shanti?
We work with adolescents and adults (18+) of all backgrounds who are struggling with addiction, mental health challenges, or both. Whether you’re new to treatment or returning after a relapse, we welcome you with compassion and respect.
Do you accept insurance?
Yes, we accept many commercial insurance plans as well as Oregon Health Plan (OHP). Our admissions team is happy to verify your benefits and help you understand what your plan will cover. We also offer self-pay options for those without insurance.
What should I expect during my first visit?
Your first visit will include a comprehensive assessment where we learn more about your history, current challenges, and recovery goals. From there, we’ll work with you to create a personalized treatment plan that aligns with your needs and preferences.
Is medication-assisted treatment (MAT) available?
Yes, we offer medication-assisted treatment for those who are appropriate candidates. MAT can be an effective part of recovery for individuals struggling with opioid or alcohol use, and it is always combined with therapy and support services.
How do I get started?
Getting started is easy. Just call us or fill out our online contact form to schedule a confidential consultation. Our team is here to answer your questions, walk you through the admissions process, and help you take that important first step toward healing.
